Mareseilles was founded around 600 B.C. by Greak sailors from Phocea, and was the first of France's major cities. Located on the Mediterranean in Provence, the city is complex, diverse, and has many different areas for students to explore. The Vieux Port (Old Port) features forests of masts, an open-air fresh fish market, and cafés with terraces overlooking the water. At the southern end of Marseilles, the village of Les Goudes is the gateway to the coastline Calanques. Here, cabins built into the rocky slopes reach almost into the sea. From Marseilles students can also explore (by boat) the Frioul Islands, Chateau d'If (where according to legend, the Count of Monte Cristo was imprisoned), Maïre, Pommègues, and Ratonneau.
