GENESEO, N.Y. - U.S. News & World Report
magazine will revise its online listing of colleges with the highest
percentage
of students receiving merit-based aid after being notified by SUNY
Geneseo of
an incorrect statistic.
Geneseo was erroneously placed on top of the list with 99 percent of
its
students receiving merit-based aid for the 2010-11 academic year
when the
actual number was 10 percent. An extra zero -- inadvertently added
to the
number of students receiving such aid in the data gathering process
(5,320
instead of 532) -- grossly inflated the percentage to the incorrect
figure.
Geneseo had 5,377 full-time undergraduates in 2010-11. The college
offers a
variety of need and non-need based financial aid.
U.S. News & World Report has assured Geneseo that it will
correct the
figure so that students and parents who use such surveys can make
accurate
decisions when considering Geneseo.
The Huffington Post also reported on the U.S. News & World
Report list and
the college has notified that publication of the error.
