GENESEO, N.Y. -- The Geneseo Wind Ensemble and Thursday Night Jazz Ensemble will perform a joint concert Feb. 25 at 8 p.m. in the college's Wadsworth Auditorium. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Wind Ensemble, conducted by James Walker, distinguished service professor of music, will feature works such as "Prelude and Rondo" by Burnett Tuthill; "Aria Della Battaglia" (Battle Song) by Renaissance composer Andrea Gabrieli, realized and conducted by student conductor Louis Lohraseb; and "Suite of Old American Dances" by Robert Russell Bennett.
"Bennett's work may not be well known to many as a composer but he was the musician who orchestrated virtually every major musical from the 1930s to the 1960s, including ‘Showboat,' ‘Oklahoma,' ‘South Pacific,' ‘The King and I,' ‘The Sound of Music,' and ‘Camelot,' among many others," said Walker. "The sound we know as the typical classical Broadway sound is his. His original composition for winds, ‘Suite of Old American Dances,' has become a classic in the wind band repertoire."
The Thursday Night Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Jonathan Kruger, will perform Bret Zvacek's "The Next Big Thing;" Mike Tomaro's "Samba Para Minha Avo;" Cy Coleman's "Witchcraft;" and Jeff Jarvis' "Category 4."
