GENESEO, N.Y. – The Livingston County Environmental Management Council recently awarded SUNY Geneseo its 2013 Earth Day Award to recognize the college's "outstanding and consistent contributions to environmental protection and stewardship in Livingston County."

The annual award is presented to an individual or organization to recognize achievements that help preserve, improve or educate the public about the Livingston County environment.

""The 2013 EMC Earth Day Award to SUNY Geneseo recognizes the extensive body of work that the college has done and continues to do for Livingston County's environment," said Ray Case, chairman of the Livingston County Environmental Management Council. "We are fortunate to have the college in our community."

The EMC highlighted the college's long-term commitment to environmental conservation. The council specifically cited the college's President's Commission on Sustainability, the Climate Action Plan, the Carbon Action Plan, and a host of supporting strategies to help reduce the college's environmental impact. SUNY Geneseo President Christopher C. Dahl signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment committing the college to achieving goals for carbon neutrality.

The council also highlighted the campus-wide focus that engages faculty, students, and staff; the college's momentum that has produced tangible and quantifiable results; and a model of sustainability and conservation that is worthy to present to others.

"The Earth Day Award is an honor that goes to the whole college community," said Dahl. "I am proud of what the college has done."

Dahl recognized a number of hard-working individuals and groups who have helped the college to pursue its sustainability efforts. He noted that since the college sits within the community, it is a partner with this community, a partnership he believes in.

The college also is requiring that all new building projects and major renovations at the college achieve a minimum of LEED silver standards. Students also have access to the interdisciplinary environmental studies minor and a number of active environmental student groups.
