GENESEO, N.Y. - - Dan Saunders, a native of Perry, N.Y., and now an assistant conductor with The Metropolitan Opera in New York City, will open this semester's Distinguished Speaker Series Jan. 23 by discussing his life in the arts. Saunders will address "My Life in Music" at 2:30 p.m. in Wadsworth Auditorium. His lecture is free and open to the public.
Saunders also is celebrated pianist and will be performing during his lecture.
"We are truly honored to welcome an artist of Dan Saunders' caliber to our campus," said Christopher C. Dahl, president of SUNY Geneseo. "It is always gratifying to see someone with roots in Western New York succeed on the world stage. We look forward to hearing him perform and gaining insight into an exciting and distinguished musical career."
Saunders has performed in recital with many of the world's leading singers, including Jessye Norman, Kiri TeKanawa, Kathleen Battle, Marilyn Horne, Tatiana Troyanos, Samuel Ramey and Thomas Allen. He has performed at the White House; Carnegie Hall; Lincoln Center; Washington's Kennedy Center; the Bastille Opera in Paris; the San Francisco Opera; the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival; the Salzburg, Tanglewood, Ravinia, and Mostly Mozart Festivals; and at London's Wigmore Hall.
Television credits include appearances on the Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, as well as NBC's Today Show. He has frequently performed with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra and has been heard on Live from Lincoln Center and on the Metropolitan Opera broadcasts. He was a conductor at the Virginia Opera for six years and has conducted orchestras in Germany, Japan and Costa Rica.
Saunders received a bachelor of music degree in piano, chamber music and conducting at the American Conservatory of Music.
