GENESEO, N.Y. - The State University of New York at Geneseo has received the Collaborative Program of the Year Award from the Association of College Unions International for its initiative, "Stand Up for One Another."

Geneseo designed the comprehensive program to train students to be responsible bystanders by looking out for one another and intervening when friends are involved in questionable behavior. The program was created by Chip Matthews, director of the college union and activities at Geneseo, in collaboration with Kim Harvey, assistant director of residence life, and Wendi Kinney, coordinator of Greek affairs and off campus living.

"I applaud the leadership of the program creators in achieving this recognition and other student life staff members who provided valuable assistance in implementing the initiative," said Robert Bonfiglio, vice president for campus and student life. "The bystander program is an important action the college has taken that will have long-term impact on assuring student safety."

Representatives from Geneseo's offices of College Union and Activities area, Residence Life and Greek Affairs initiated bystander intervention and facilitator training last spring for student leaders. They discussed the college's values of community, diversity and integrity with new Geneseo students at the beginning of this school year, stressing the importance of standing up for one another and taking action when necessary.
