Jack's Mannequin and Augustana to
Perform at SUNY Geneseo April 21
Geneseo, N.Y.—The State University of New York
at Geneseo has announced this year's annual spring concert will feature Jack's
Mannequin with opening act Augustana at 8 p.m. April 21 in Kuhl Gymnasium.
Doors will open at 7 p.m.
"Unlike in past semesters,
we do not have one big headliner and a very small, unknown opener," says
Kristina Sym, a senior business administration major from Niskayuna, N.Y. and
chair of the Activities Commission's concert committee. "I felt it would be
best to have a more well-known opener this semester to try and make the concert
appeal to more students."
Jack's Mannequin, of Orange
County, Calif., was formed as a side project by vocalist/pianist Andrew McMahon
in 2004. McMahon also is known as the vocalist/pianist for another rock band from
California named Something Corporate.
In 2003, McMahon recorded a
song that sounded very different from the previous material Something Corporate
had produced. In the summer of 2004, Something Corporate took a break from
years of touring, giving McMahon the ability to develop his music and lyrics.
McMahon never expected the songs to be officially released.
In August of 2005, the
recordings were released to form the band's debut album, "Everything in
Transit," which came out following McMahon's fight with acute lymphoblastic
leukemia in June of that same year. The album essentially tells the story of
McMahon becoming reacquainted with himself after years of touring with
Something Corporate.
Augustana, of San Diego,
Calif., formed in 2004. In 2005, the band put out its first major label
production, "All the Stars and Boulevards," which to date has sold 160,000
copies in the U.S. The band
recently experienced heightened popularity as a result of its single "Boston."
"Student reaction was
great on the first day of ticket sales," says Sym. "One student told me, 'would
have never imagined these two bands being on the same stage. This is going to
be an awesome concert!' "
Tickets are $15 for students
and $22 for the general public and can be purchased through the Student
Association Ticket Office in the MacVittie College Union or by calling (800)
525-2070 or (585) 245-5873. General public tickets also can be purchased
through ticketmaster.com. Student tickets went on sale Feb. 26, and general
public tickets will be made available March 5.
This concert is sponsored by
the Activities Commission. For more information, contact Carey Backman at backman@geneseo.edu.
