SUNY Geneseo promotes first-class
education in USAirways magazine

"In New York, the best and brightest choose Geneseo"

GENESEO, N.Y. — The sky's the limit for students enrolled at the State University of New York at Geneseo and during July, up to 7 million passengers on US Airways flights will know why. The College is featured in a regional profile of Rochester in USAirways Magazine in both advertising and editorial coverage.

A full-page, four-color advertisement informs a national audience that Geneseo is one of the nation's most selective public colleges. The ad also reinforces Geneseo's reputation for enrolling 'the best and brightest in New York.'

"This is a wonderful opportunity to inform millions of people of Geneseo's academic excellence within the SUNY System and in the country," said Christopher C. Dahl, president of SUNY Geneseo. "It also allows us to impress upon Rochesterians and Western New Yorkers that Geneseo is an integral part of Rochester," he said. More than 10,000 Geneseo alumni live and work in the greater Rochester area.

According to Dahl, who also serves as chairman of the Rochester Area Colleges (RAC), a consortium of 19 public and private colleges and universities, higher education has become an economic development engine for the Rochester region. The USAirways Magazine profile will raise awareness of the strong and varied academic institutions in the region, a key factor in attracting business and industry. The RAC also advertised its innovative Web site, www.biz2edu.com, in the July issue to connect economic development organizations and corporations to Rochester's higher education resources.

"Our advertisement is designed to raise national visibility for the College and to attract 'the best and brightest' from other states," said Bill Caren, Geneseo's associate vice president for enrollment management. "The readership demographics of USAirways Magazine aligned quite nicely with our student and family profile data." According to Caren, Geneseo leads all other public institutions in SUNY's selectivity index: members of the class of 2011 have a mean SAT of 1313.

Geneseo also is included in the article on higher education for its unique Student Externship Program. The competitive program connects students with alumni in Boston, New York and Washington, D.C., for a weeklong immersion experience to learn more about careers and culture in those cities.
