SUNY Geneseo Galleries to Exhibit the Work of Arts
Professor Michael Teres
GENESEO, N.Y.—The State University of New York
at Geneseo will host an intriguing retrospective photography exhibit titled
"Michael Teres: 40 Years of Excellence." This exhibit, to be showcased at the
Lockhart, Lederer and Milne Library galleries, is the first to span three
different locations at the college.
The exhibit opens Thursday,
April 19, and will run through May 10. The exhibit is free and open to the
public at all three galleries. An opening reception will be held from 5-7 p.m.
Saturday, April 21, at the Lockhart and Lederer galleries.
Teres, professor of art at
Geneseo, has been instructing students at the college for 40 years. He earned
his bachelor's degree in art from Hunter College in New York City in 1962, his
master's degree in art from the University of Iowa in 1965 and his master of
fine arts degree in art from the University of Iowa in 1966. Teres' photographs
are featured in 14 major collections, including the Houston Museum of Modern
Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the International Museum of
Photography and Film at the George Eastman House and the Art Institute of
Chicago.
Teres' work also is featured
in several books, including "Black and White Photography: An International
Collection," by James Leciana. His work, which has received numerous awards and
honors, is published in various catalogs. He also has written about
photography, and has been published in various books and journals.
"Michael Teres: 40 Years of
Excellence" will feature works from different stages of Teres' 40-year career
in photography. The exhibit begins with a few figurative student pieces from
1966, when Teres was strictly working in black and white, dip and dunk
photography. Following the student pieces, Teres shows a combination of figure
and landscape photographs which experiment with the process of photography as
well as the image product. The exhibit then moves to digital and computer
photography, featuring photographs that suggest alternate realities based on
the manipulation of light and color.
"In 1966, I commented that I
photograph what I see. Now, I photograph what I cannot see," says Teres. "There
will obviously be a change in my style and development, but also in the
process, technology and the evolution of my subject over my career."
