SUNY Geneseo Welcomes Alumna Julie Briggs Back to Campus as Assistant Vice President for Human Resources
Geneseo, N.Y.—The State University of New York at Geneseo has announced Julie Briggs, a native of Arkport, N.Y., has joined the college as assistant vice president for human resources and chief affirmative action officer. She began her new role on Sept. 21.
Briggs, a Geneseo alumna, received her bachelor's degree in management science from Geneseo in 1990. She received her master's degree in cross/disciplinary professional studies, specializing in human resource development and management, from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2000. She comes to Geneseo from Alfred State with vast experience in the field of human resources.
Her career began at First Federal Savings and Loan of Rochester, where she worked in telephone banking from 1991 to 1993 and in corporate training from 1993 to 1996. She then went on to the University of Rochester, where she worked as an education consultant in the human resource development program for four years. In 2000, Briggs went to Alfred State College, where she served as the coordinator of training and development and assistant director of human resources until 2002, when she was promoted to director of human resources and affirmative action officer. In that role, she also oversaw payroll services.
"This position is a wonderful growth opportunity for me along the career progression I have achieved thus far," says Briggs. "There is no better institution to serve than one that is built around learning, discovery and community. All of these elements are core to SUNY Geneseo, which is very exciting to me."
In her new position, Briggs will oversee the overall operations of the human resources and payroll departments, including employee and labor relations, benefits administration, employment and affirmative action.
"I am confident in taking on this job," says Briggs. "At Alfred State, I performed many of the same functions as the director of human resources, which has prepared me to work in this role at SUNY Geneseo."
"I'm interested in working on programs that will continue to attract and retain high quality faculty and staff at the college. The human resources and payroll services department will be developing an assessment plan, so we understand how we are doing and where we are adding value to the organization. Programs and processes for employee orientation and succession planning are also under review. We need to continuously analyze the workforce so that we can sustain and preserve our high quality faculty and staff as well as meet future needs," says Briggs.
As a Geneseo alum, Briggs is excited to be returning to her alma mater. "The campus is even more beautiful than I remember," says Briggs, staring out her second-floor window onto the College Green. "The new buildings and the Green really look great. The people here are extremely friendly, open and helpful."
"I feel very privileged to work in this organization and in this role," says Briggs. "It was at this school that I learned about the field of personnel and labor relations. I feel very fortunate to be able to give back to this organization which has given so much to me."
Ken Levison, vice president for finance and administration at the college, is delighted Briggs has joined Geneseo.
"Ms. Briggs has a distinguished background in human resources. Her knowledge of human resource management and familiarity with state requirements and SUNY procedures will help her to have an immediate impact on the quality of services that we provide for our employees," says Levison.
