Geneseo Dance Ensemble to Present “Converging Energies” Concert April 23-26

GENESEO, N.Y. -- The State University of New York at Geneseo’s Dance Ensemble will feature diverse works by both faculty and students during its “Converging Energies” concert April 23-26 in the college’s Alice Austin Theatre.  The Thursday through Saturday performances begin at 8 p.m.  The Sunday matinee begins at 2 o’clock.  Tickets are $8 and are available at the Brodie Hall Box Office or by calling (585) 245-5833 or visiting http://bbo.geneseo.edu.

Visiting lecturer Joe Langworth, a Geneseo alumnus who was part of the final cast in Broadway’s “A Chorus Line” and has been in other major Broadway and national tour productions, will present “Cool,” a restaging of the classic choreography of Jerome Robbins from “West Side Story.”  He also will present “Department Store Circa 66,” a dance that visits the unique sound and style of the 1960s.  Guest choreographer Jim Hansen, associate professor of dance at SUNY Brockport, will present “Queen for a Day,” a satirical dance about social competition set to Bach’s 4th Brandenburg Concerto.  Ruben Ornelas, assistant professor dance at SUNY Geneseo, will present “Past Perfect,” a contemporary dance inspired by the work of African American artist Cynthia Hawkins, set to music by Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara.

Three SUNY students also will present works.  Whitney Forbes will present “Dynamics of Divergence/Hope for Harmony,” a contemporary ballet about group conflict and the inevitable need for resolution.  Marisa Garber will present “Overcome,” a contemporary dance about moving forward on the path of life in spite of obstacles.  Caitlyn Redmond will present “Life is a Stage,” a dance that examines the journey from childhood to adulthood and the loss of freedom we experience as we mature.

Ornelas and Langworth are co-directing the production with the support of student assistant directors Vickie Chatley and Cait Mihalic.  The production staff includes Johnnie Ferrell, technical and lighting director; Steven Stubblefield, set designer; Crystal Ferrell, costume designer; Andrew Tao Li, stage manager; and Aly Ellis, assistant stage manager.

The Geneseo Dance Ensemble is sponsored by the Academic Affairs Committee, Student Association, The Geneseo Foundation, Orchesis Dance Organization and the School of the Arts.
