SUNY Geneseo calendar of events for March 23-29
THURSDAY, MARCH 23:
LOCKHART GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Lockhart Gallery, located in the
McClellan House, presents an exhibit titled "The Legacy of Susan B." The
gallery is open daily from 11:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and Fridays 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Free
and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Friday, March 31.
FRIDAY, MARCH 24:
CONVERSATION IN THE DISCIPLINE: SUNY Geneseo is hosting a Conversation in the
Discipline titled "Local Studies, a National Movement: Toward a Historiography
of the Black Freedom Movement" on Friday, March 24 through Sunday, March 26.
Panel discussions will run the gamut, from "Local Studies: What Do They Tell
Us? Why Do They Matter?" to "Women, Gender, and Leadership" to "Moving Beyond
Dichotomies: Reframing Nonviolence vs. Violence, Integration vs. Nationalism,
and Civil Rights vs. Black Power." The conference will begin with an opening
reception at 2 p.m. Friday, March 24. Panels will be held Friday afternoon,
followed by Emeritus Professor of History at DePauw University John Dittmer's
keynote address titled "Southern Community Studies and Their Critics" at 5:30
p.m. Following an 8:30 a.m. breakfast, Saturday's panels will begin at 9 a.m.
and go through 4:30 p.m. Saturday's keynotes include civil rights leader Judy
Richardson's talk tentatively titled "Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal
Stories and Reflections from Women and SNCC" at 12:30 p.m. and Charles Payne's
talk titled "Why Study the Movement?" at 5 p.m. Following an 8 a.m. breakfast
on Sunday, the conference will conclude with Associate Professor of History
Emilye Crosby's teaching workshop, which will run from 8:30 a.m. to noon. All events
will be held in Holcomb Hall. Conference registration is $35 for the entire
conference or $25 for one day. Registration is free for SUNY Geneseo faculty,
staff and students, and all students enrolled in area colleges or other

DANCE CONCERT: The
School of the Arts presents the Orchesis Dance Concert. 8 p.m., Alice Austin
Theatre, Brodie Hall. Tickets are $3 and may be purchased at the Brodie Box
Office (245-5833) or at the door on the night of the performance.
KINETIC ART GALLERY EXHIBIT: The Kinetic Art Gallery, on the second floor of the MacVittie College
Union, presents an exhibit by senior Jacqueline Weaver. There will be an
opening reception at 7 p.m. The gallery is open Mondays 2-5 p.m., Tuesdays
12:30-5 p.m., Wednesdays 2-7 p.m., Thursdays 12:30-7 p.m., Fridays 2-5 p.m. and
Saturdays 12-4 p.m. Free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through
Saturday, April 1.

PERFORMANCE: The
Limelight & Accents Performing Arts Series presents Nebellen. Striving to
create something new and accessible, Nebellen uses current and innovative music
from electronics to hip hop to rhythm and blues. Breaking all the rules of
traditional dance techniques, while experimenting in dance fusion performance,
Nebellen dancers arouse audiences by bringing together different forms of
dance, from break dancing to traditional ballet. Nebellen brings a blend of raw
movement and passion to the stage. 8 p.m., Wadsworth Auditorium. Tickets are $5
for Geneseo students, $12 for faculty and staff, and $15 for the general
public. Tickets may be purchased at the MacVittie College Union Ticket Office

LECTURE: The
Activities Commission is hosting speaker Arun Gandhi. Gandhi is the grandson of
Mohandas Gandhi and is the founder of the M.K. Gandhi Institute for
Nonviolence. The title of his lecture is "Nonviolence or Nonexistence: Options
for the 21st Century." 7 p.m., MacVittie College Union Ballroom. Free and open
to the public.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 29:

PLAY: The School of
the Arts and GENseng, Geneseo's Asian American Performance Ensemble, presents
Sam Oeun Tes and Bonavy Chhim of the Cambodian American Heritage Association in
Washington, D.C. They will give a short performance of a Cambodian classical
court dance, which will be accompanied by a staged reading by GENseng of
Catherine Filloux' one-act drama about the Tuol Sleng prison under the Pol Pot
regime titled "Photographs from S-21." 4 p.m., Black Box Theatre, Brodie Hall.
Free and open to the public. Tes and Chhim also will teach an Asian dance class
from 11:20 a.m.-12:35 p.m. Tuesday, March 28, and Thursday, March 30, in the
Alice Austin Theatre in Brodie Hall. The general public and college community
are welcome to come and watch.
