Geneseo-Area Providers

Below is a list of off-campus therapists located in the Geneseo area, many of whom are within walking distance of campus (as indicated). The list below is only a partial selection of area providers; if you would like to speak with a counselor about additional options within the Greater Rochester area, please give our office a call at 585-245-5716.  For more information about the different types of professionals listed, you might also want to visit our What Do Those Degrees Mean? page.

When contacting these providers, keep in mind that you might reach voice mail; be prepared to leave a message. When you speak with the therapist, be prepared to say a little about your concerns. You may also want to ask about fees and about what kinds of health insurance they will accept if you are planning to use insurance. (It is hepful to consult ahead of time with your parent, partner, or employer about the name of your health insurance and whether there are specific procedures you must use to get mental health treatment--e.g., do you need "prior approval"?). If you do not have insurance and will need to pay for this yourself, some providers have a "sliding fee scale" which sets a fee based upon your income and other variables.

Finding a Therapist Outside of Geneseo

If you are looking for a therapist outside of the Geneseo area (e.g., in your hometown for over the summer), here are some suggestions for connecting with appropriate mental health services:

  1. Ask your family doctor/primary care physician for recommendations.
  2. If there is a college nearby, call the counseling center and ask who they refer to in the local area.
  3. Solicit recommendations from family members and friends.
  4. Look in your local yellow pages under “Counselors - Personal,” “Counselors – Marriage and Family,” “Psychotherapists,” “Psychologists,” or "Physicians - Psychiatrists" (for medication).
  5. Visit the American Psychological Association's psychologist locator page: http://locator.apa.org/.
  6. Visit New York State's Office of Mental Health web site to search for a mental health program in your community:  http://bi.omh.state.ny.us/bridges/index.

Other factors to consider:
  1. Availability.  When is the therapist available to meet with you?  Does he or she have current openings?  If you do not own a vehicle, is he or she close to campus or accessible via the LATS bus?  When could you begin?
  2. Training.  What is the therapist’s training and experience with your area of concern?  Is he or she licensed?  You may describe what you are looking for and ask how the therapist might work with you.  Pay attention to how comfortable you feel with the responses you receive.
  3. Fees. What is the charge per visit?  Does the therapist have a sliding fee, and if so, how does it work?  (“Sliding scale” means that fees are reduced for a certain percentage of clients who would have trouble paying the full fee.)  Is the therapist eligible for payment under your current insurance plan?

Keep in mind that when seeking off-campus mental health services, you will be responsible for all costs involved.  Check with your health care provider to determine the extent of your coverage and whether a referral from your primary care physician is required in order to access services.
