Federal TEACH Grant

The Federal TEACH Grant is a new financial aid option for students in majors that prepare them to become teachers in high need fields.  In exchange for the grant, the student must meet a service obligation by teaching in one of these fields, and at a school that serves low-income students.

FAILURE TO MEET THE TEACHING OBLGATION WILL RESULT IN THIS GRANT CONVERTING INTO A FEDERAL UNSUBSIDIZED DIRECT STAFFORD STUDENT LOAN - WITH INTEREST CHARGED FROM THE DATE YOU RECEIVED THE ORIGINAL GRANT.

To qualify academically, you must:

  • have scored above the 75th percentile of an academic achievement test (SAT Math or Verbal; ACT Math, Verbal or Composite; or GRE Verbal or Quantitative Reasoning, or the GRE Analytical Writing); OR
  • maintain a 3.25 GPA at Geneseo (freshmen must have earned a 3.25 GPA (87.5) in high school and then will have to maintain a 3.25 at Geneseo.)

(Meeting the 75th percentile criteria means you will not need to maintain a 3.25 - it would benefit you to forward your test scores to us if they weren't reported as part of your admission application.)

Before deciding to request a TEACH Grant, you should carefully read the Department of Education's "TEACH Grant Fact Sheet," discuss the program with your parents, and refer any questions to the Financial Aid Office.
