Applying for Aid

STEP 1: The FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid

All students, prospective freshman, transfers, continuing or graduate, need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered for federal student aid, including federal grants and loans. 

 

As you complete the FAFSA, be sure to...

  • List SUNY Geneseo's Title IV School Code, 002845.
  • Use the FAFSA line by line instruction sheet, here.
  • Provide estimated income from the prior year, if the actual figures are unavailable. Once available, you should update the FAFSA with the correct figures.
  • File by the recommended deadlines: February 15th for prospective students and March 1st for continuing/returning students.
  • Sign the FAFSA with your Federal PIN (Your parent has to sign too, if you are a dependent student.)
  • If you need assistance, review the resources provided here or through Federal Student Aid Help.

 

Since some campus based aid, like Federal Perkins Loan, SEOG (Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant), and Federal Work-Study have limited funding, these awards are made on a first-come/first-serve basis. So, the earlier you file your FAFSA, the greater likelihood you will be considered.

STEP 2: NYS TAP: New York State Tuition Assistance Program

From the NYS Higher Education Services Corportation (HESC): "New York State (NYS) Residents attending NYS schools will have the option to link directly to the TAP application from the FAFSA submission confirmation page.

 

If you exited the FAFSA before selecting this option, you can complete the application after HESC received your FAFSA data (three days). HESC will send you an email or postcard notifying you to complete the TAP application online if you did not select the FAFSA link to TAP on the web."

Institutional Scholarship Information

For scholarship consideration, prospective students are reviewed by the Office of Admissions and notified separately from the Financial Aid Award Notice. Continuing Students are reviewed for scholarship eligibility through the Geneseo Foundation Office. Applications are typically made available in early spring for the next academic year. Continuing students looking for assistance for Study Abroad should visit the Study Abroad Office.
