Placement Files

Current Students

Geneseo's Office of Career Development is no longer opening or servicing placement files for past, present, or future students. Previously established placement files (for current students and May 2012 grads) have been forwarded to and are now being managed by Interfolio, an online credentials file service (www.interfolio.com). Current students who do not already have a placement file and would like to open one have the choice of using Interfolio, another online placement file service (such as edzapp.com), or the placement file service of another college (if any others were attended).  Determine the placement file service that you would like to use, establish an online account, and enjoy 24/7 access to your file. You may also contact us in the Office of Career Development at 585-245-5721 if you have any questions.  Thank you!

Alumni

The Office of Career Development entered into an agreement with online credentials provider Interfolio in June 2012 to manage all existing Geneseo placement files. Interfolio allows fileholders to manage their own credentials 24/7. If you are a May 2012 graduate who had already established a placement file with our office, your file was forwarded to Interfolio, and a one-year subscription was established for you. Any May 2012 graduate who needs action taken on their file must do so directly through Interfolio. We no longer have your file in our possession and therefore cannot facilitate any action you need taken on it.

All other alumni who have a placement file with our office have numerous options regarding the future of your file, including:

1. Establish an active account with Interfolio ( http://www.interfolio.com) for the nominal cost of $19 per year (Geneseo alumni are given an 18-month subscription for the annual rate of $19).
2. Contract with another university’s credentialing service.
3. Establish an account with another online credentialing service (such as edzapp.com).
4. Authorize the Office of Career Development to destroy the contents of your file.

If you choose to move your file to Interfolio, you must complete their "Transfer Form" found at:
http://www.interfolio.com/faq/documents/transfer_form.pdf) and send it to us, and we will forward your file to Interfolio.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the Office of Career Development at 585-245-5721.

What is a placement file?

  • A placement file is a file (either online or in hard copy) that contains documents (letters of reference, transcripts, published articles, etc) that you will need to submit to prospective  graduate schools or employers.
  • What goes in a placement file?

  • Letters of recommendation
  • Unofficial transcripts (including unofficial transcripts from other colleges/universities)
  • Other appropriate documents that you want to share with an employer or grad school
  • What if I want to put a transcript in my file?

  • Request that the Registrar in Erwin 102 send your transcript either via snail mail or electronically to your chosen placement file service.  If you are managing your own placement file, you will only be given an unofficial transcript.
  • Whom should I ask for letters of recommendation?

  • Professors, supervisors, or others especially familiar with you and your work.
  • The more relevant that your reference writer is to your career goals, the better.
  • Cooperating and supervising teachers' comments carry the most weight with education employers.
  • Avoid character references (neighbors, friends, etc.).
  • It is your responsibility to check with your chosen placement file service to determine if your letters have been received.
