Office of Career Development - Policies
- Job listings received are available for review by all interested Geneseo students or alumni.
- Requests by employers for selective referrals of candidates will not be honored.
- Positions received from third party sources (Employment Agencies, etc.) will be posted with a statement that disclaims any endorsement of that organization by the Career Development Office.
- The Office of Career Development will not cooperate with any employer known to discriminate in hiring practices.
- Students/alumni from other colleges may request assistance from SUNY Geneseo’s Office of Career Development. Access to the career resource area and job postings is provided. The availability of individual counseling appointments will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Participation in on-campus recruiting and credentials service is not allowed.
- SUNY Geneseo Office of Career Development will not provide services to employers who offer employment contingent on an initial payment or investment. This policy includes any organization serving as an umbrella or parent corporation. This may include, but is not limited to: direct payment of a fixed fee; payment to attend pre-employment orientation or training sessions; and/or purchase or rent of a starter kit, sales kit, samples, or presentation supplies.
Placement Files (credentials files)
As of July 1, 2012, the Office of Career Development outsourced its placement file process and will no longer create or service placement files for current and future students. The previously opened files of current students were forwarded to Interfolio, a web-based credentials processing service. Students who are not already file holders and want to open a placement file may do so with any credentials file service such as Interfolio (www.interfolio.com), edzapp (www.edzapp.com), or any other. There is usually a nominal cost for a year's subscription to these services (approx $20-$25 per year), as there was a cost to open a file through the Office of Career Development. Simply go to the website of the service in which you are interested and create an account for whatever duration of time you would like, and enjoy 24/7 access to your account.
Letters of Recommendation
Use institutional forms if provided by the graduate school to which you are applying, and provide the recommender with a stamped envelope, if the letter needs to be mailed (i.e., if you do not establish a credentials file with an online credentials file service, like Interfolio). Keep in mind that it is the student's responsibility to let the author of the recommendation letter know whether the letter is to be open (i.e., the student may see it) or confidential. Most letter requesters waive their right to see their letters, but each requester must decide for themselves.
On Campus Recruitment
- Employers may use campus facilities to recruit if they agree to the practice of nondiscrimination consistent with federal and state nondiscrimination and Equal Opportunity laws, orders, and regulations and will not discriminate against any person because of race, sex, color, creed, age, national origin, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or status as a disabled veteran or veteran of the Vietnam era.
- No employer may schedule more than two visits per semester.
- Advance notice of at least one month is required to schedule a campus recruitment date. Special requests will be reviewed and decided upon by the Assistant Director.
- Commercial employment agencies may not interview candidates on campus
- Recruitment interviews are limited to current Geneseo seniors. Alumni may be included on a space available basis.
- Candidates failing to show up for campus interviews may be denied access to future interviews. Advanced notice of cancellation prior to interview date must be given in order to remain in good standing within the on-campus recruiting program.
