Seniors Katie Talbot and Sarah Shields each won a pair of matches to lead the Geneseo women's tennis team to their fourth title in the last five years as the Blue Knights defeated New Paltz by a score of 5-0 in the championship match of the 2012 SUNYAC Tennis tournament at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Geneseo (9-1), who defeated Cortland in the quarterfinals (5-0) and Plattsburgh in the semifinals (5-0), qualifies automatically for the 2013 NCAA Division III championships to be held in May as the Blue Knights avenged their lone dual match loss of the season, which came by the score of 5-4 at New Paltz on September 14.
Geneseo jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles portion this afternoon as Talbot teamed with first year Mare Santos to win 8-0 at first doubles, while Shields combined with sophomore Amanda Rosati to win 8-0 at third doubles. Sisters Dexuan and Minxuan Yuan teamed to capture an 8-2 victory at second doubles. In the singles action, Talbot garnered a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles, while Shields won a 6-1, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
In the unfinished matches, Santos led 6-3, 5-2 at first singles, Dexuan Yuan trailed 6-2, 2-2 at second singles, Rosati trailed 6-2, 1-3 at fourth singles and sophomore Zakiyyah Abdus-Salaam led 6-1, 4-1 at sixth singles.
