The Geneseo women's field hockey team hosted Utica (4-2) this afternoon and dropped a tough 2-1 decision despite outshooting the Pioneers by a 15-4 count and controlling the penalty corner opportunities, 14-3. The Pioneers scored the lone goal of the first half at 6:26 on a tip-in at the left post by Louise Steele-Norton during a penalty corner chance. In the second half, Geneseo kept pressure on Utica throughout, but the Pioneers took a 2-0 lead with an impressive individual effort by Hannah Mackey, who pushed the ball in transition on a fastbreak and finished for an unassisted tally. Geneseo kept applying pressure and was awarded a penalty stroke at 66:31. Sophomore Kayla DeAngelis fired the stroke just wide of the left post, but stole the succeeding hit and passed across the crease to first year Brianne Campagna (pictured left) for her first career goal just 11 seconds later at 66:42. The Blue Knights would not get another chance over the remaining 3:18 as the Pioneers held on for the win. Sophomore Caitlyn Dowell made two saves in taking the loss. The Blue Knights fall to 4-3 on the season and host Morrisville on Friday at 4 p.m.
