GENESEO, N.Y. – Two members of the Geneseo men’s basketball
team (17-10) have been named to the State University of New York Athletic
Conference (SUNYAC) all-star team. Sophomore forward Gordon Lyons
(Buffalo/Canisius) was a second-team selection and senior forward Ryan
Riefenhauser (Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) was a third-team pick.
Lyons was Geneseo’s leading scorer (14.1 ppg) and rebounder (8.7 rpg). He
collected 43 assists and 23 steals while shooting a team-high 61.3 percent from
the floor.
“Gordon really turned it up the second half of the season,” praised Geneseo
coach Steve Minton. “He was outstanding throughout the year but was especially
good as we came down the stretch run of the SUNYACs. The coaching staff
challenged him numerous times to do more and to step up his game. We
raised the bar often for Gordon and each time we did, he responded with even
greater effort.”
He recorded 10 double-doubles on the season and was an all-tournament selection
at both the Wendy’s College Classic and the SUNYAC Championship Tournament.
Lyons ranked second in the SUNYAC in both rebounding and field-goal percentage
and was the conference’s 12th-leading scorer.
Riefenhauser was the only Knight to start every game this winter. He averaged
9.1 points (third on the team) and 6.5 rebounds per game (second). He was the
team leader with both 90 assists and 39 steals. Riefenhauser shot 59.8 percent
from the floor. A three-year starter (he transferred to Geneseo for his
sophomore season), he finished his career with 786 points, 542 rebounds and 225
assists in 79 games while shooting 54.6 percent from the floor.
“Ryan has had an outstanding career; in only three years he finished 15th
all-time in rebounding and sixth in field-goal percentage,” said Minton. “He
is a high energy player that leads by example. As a junior he led the team in
scoring and rebounding and this season he led the team in assists. He
recognized the scoring abilities of Connor Fedge and Gordon Lyons and made sure
they got more touches within our offense.”
He ranked among the SUNYAC leaders in assists (sixth), assist-to-turnover ratio
(sixth), rebounding (eighth) and steals (16th).
The Knights finished the season 17-10, including a 12-6 record in the SUNYAC
(good for third place in the regular-season standings). Geneseo beat New Paltz 98-80 in the
quarterfinals of the SUNYAC playoffs before being eliminated by Plattsburgh in
the tournament semifinals.
