For the first time since a consolation bracket win over New Paltz in 2007, the third-seeded Geneseo women's softball team walked off the field winners this afternoon after a 5-1 victory over fourth-seeded Buffalo State (20-19) in the opening round of the 2012 SUNYAC double elimination softball tournament at Cortland.
Junior Mary Bostwick (14-8) scattered six hits, walked five and struck out six in allowing just a lone third-inning run after Geneseo had taken a 5-0 lead by erupting for four runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Geneseo scored a run in the first inning as senior Kelsey Ogden led off with a single, junior Jane LePage reached on an error trying to sacrifice bunt and Ogden scored on an RBI single by sophomore Sam Trapasso.
In the second inning, Geneseo got a two-run double by senior KK Schaus, an RBI single by junior Stef Rosenberg and Trapasso scored on a wild pitch.
The Blue Knights (22-17) advance to the winners bracket and face #2 Plattsburgh, a 3-1 winner over #5 Brockport today, on Friday at 11 a.m. in Cortland.
