The visiting fifth-seeded Fredonia Blue Devils (12-10-3) scored three times in the third period and skated to a 4-1 win over fourth-seeded Geneseo in the first round of the SUNYAC Men's Ice Hockey tournament tonight in the Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. Fredonia's Andrew Christ scored two goals and an assist, including the game-winner and an empty-netter to pace the Blue Devils and senior Billy Sanborn and first year Brian Doust added a goal each. Sophomore Mark Friesen made 20 saves to earn the win in nets for Fredonia.
The Blue Devils took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission when Doust scored on an assist from senior Bryan Ross just six seconds into a power play opportunity. In the second period, Geneseo senior David Arduin scored on a rebound in the slot with assists going to junior Ryan Bulach and junior Colin de Jersey at the 9:21 mark for a 1-1 game at the break.
In the third period, Fredonia killed off 4:31 of a Geneseo power play after a major penalty to start the frame and took the 2-1 lead on a rebound goal by Christ after a turnover in the neutral zone. Ross got the helper on the play at 8:45. The Blue Devils struck just 20 seconds later as Sanborn collected the goal off a pass from Christ to give the Devils a 3-1 lead at 9:05 and Fredonia sealed the win with the empty net goal at 19:21.
Senior Cory Gershon made 26 saves in taking the loss for Geneseo as the Ice Knights end their season with a record of 13-12-1.
Fredonia travels to Oswego to take on the top-seeded Lakers in the semifinals on Saturday.
