Clermont, Fla. – The Geneseo softball team (4-4) swept
Allegheny (6-7) and Mass.-Boston (2-3) Tuesday, winning 13-7 and 7-0 to move to
.500 on the season. The Knights are 3-1 on their spring trip.
The Knights opened Tuesday by scoring six runs over their final two at-bats,
pulling away from a 7-7 tie to beat Allegheny.
Sophomore Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East) hit a two-run pinch-hit single in
the bottom of the fifth to put the Knights ahead for good and junior first
baseman Samantha Trapasso (Garden City/Garden City) tripled in a pair of runs to
highlight Geneseo’s four-run sixth.
Trapasso, who hit a two-run home run during the Knights’ five-run second, finished
with four runs batted in and sophomore catcher Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville
North) scored three runs to pace Geneseo’s offense.
Reilley’s go-ahead single in the fifth plated first year Melissa Mastoridis (New
Hyde Park/New Hyde Park Memorial) – who was pinch-running for senior third baseman
Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) after Steubing was hit by a pitch to lead
off the inning – and first year left fielder Catherine Krok (Buffalo/Williamsville
East), who reached on an error.
An inning later pinch hitter Abby Weiss (Hamburg/Hamburg) opened the sixth by
reaching on an error and first year Jenna Phillips (Angola/Lakeshore) beat out
a pinch-hit bunt for a single. Errors on a bunts by Fillmore and Brown brought
in two runs and set up Trapasso’s two-run triple.
Senior Katie Gallagher (Gansevoort/Schuylerville) earned the win – her first of
the scoring – throwing a complete game.
The Knights scored twice in the first and five times in the second. Senior right
fielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) singled in a run in the first
and Geneseo’s second run scored on the first of the Gators’ seven errors.
The second started with Krok’s lead-off single. Junior second baseman Kayleigh Troia
(Phoenix/John C. Birdlebough) reached on one error, then stole second and went
to third on another error. Fillmore beat out an infield single and Brown hit a
run-scoring double before Trapasso hit her second home run in as many days (and
the 10th of her career) to cap the inning.
The Knights won for the fourth time in five games, blanking UMass-Boston 7-0.
Sophomore Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece Arcadia) threw a complete-game
five-hit shutout to improve to 3-1 on the year. She struck out a season-best
nine batters and allowed just two walks. The Beacons advanced just two runners past
third.
Sophomore center fielder Catherine Heacox (Smithtown/Smithtown), sophomore catcher
Jami Cohen (East Amherst/Williamsville East), Trapasso and Williams each had
two of Geneseo’s 10 hits.
Heacox’s second-inning single drove in Williams for the game’s first run and
Geneseo scored three runs in both the third and fourth.
Four UMass-Boston errors in the third coupled with singles by Trapasso and
Williams led to three Knight runs. Trapasso’s two-run double highlighted Geneseo’s
three-run fourth.
