Junior Ryan Riefenhauser hit 6-7 from the field and 3-5 from the line for 15 points with eight rebounds and the Geneseo men's basketball team made seven of eight free throws in the final 53 seconds to defeat the visiting Oneonta Red Dragons (2-19/1-13 SUNYAC), 67-57. Sophomore Connor Fedge scored 13 points with seven boards on five of 10 shooting, sophomore Matt Curry hit 5-11 from the field and 2-5 from the arc for 12 points and senior Mike Hoy made all seven of his free throws on the way to 11 points. Geneseo led by as many as seven points in the first half before settling for a one-point lead at 28-27. In the second stanza, the Blue Knights led 47-45 with 7:30 to play before Curry completed a 7-2 spurt with a three-pointer with 4:32 left and Fedge hit consecutive layups to give Geneseo a nine-point lead at 60-51. The Blue Knights move to 10-10 overall and 8-5 in SUNYAC and travel to Buffalo State on Friday.
The visiting Oneonta Red Dragons (14-6/12-2 SUNYAC) used an 11-3 run late in the game on the way to registering a 68-61 win over the Geneseo women's basketball team to keep their hold on first place in the SUNYAC. The Blue Knights, who trailed 31-19 at the intermission after a 20-4 run by the Red Dragons to close the half, stormed back as first year Cara Manfredi hit five shots from three-point range in the second half on the way to a career-high 16 points. Geneseo took their first lead of the second half at 54-53 on a pair of free throws by senior Bri Dunton with 6:53 to play, but Oneonta put together the late spurt to lead by seven with 1:25 to play. Junior Melissa Graham hit 6-11 from the field and 2-5 from the arc for 14 points with nine rebounds, Dunton scored eight points and sophomore Lea Sobieraski netted eight points with eight rebounds and five assists. The Blue Knights fall to 12-8 overall and 7-6 in SUNYAC and travel to Buffalo State on Friday.
Senior Lee Berube won the mile in a Glazer Arena record time of 4:16.39 and won the 3,000 meters in 8:25.00 to highlight the Geneseo men's indoor track and field performances at the Ithaca Invitational today. First year Ben Schwartz won the 500 meters for Geneseo with a time of 1:08.32, while senior Colin Keenan placed fourth in the high jump (1.88 meters) and fifth in the 60 meter dash (7.30) and senior Greg Izzo placed fourth in the 500 in 1:11.31 and fifth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.73. Geneseo's Matt Hart was fourth in the 200 in 23.51, Tim Chambers placed fourth in the 3,000 meters in 9:00.12 and first year Phil Longo was fifth in the high jump with a height of 1.83 meters. Geneseo travels to the Valentine's Day Invitational at Boston University on Friday.
The women's indoor track and field team traveled to the Ithaca Invitational today and junior Emily Sullivan posted the top finish after placing third in the 800 meters with a time of 2:22.37. Junior Marissa Liberati placed fifth in the same event in 2:24.44, senior Kelly Brunscheen was fourth in the 400 meters in 1:01.37 and first year Allison Hoh finished sixth in the 3,000 meters in 10:51.98. Junior Diahann Cuevo and sophomore DD Yanoti each placed seventh in their event as Cuevo posted an 8.28 time in the 60 meter dash and Yanoti jumped 9.95 meters in the triple jump. The Blue Knights travel to Boston University for the Valentine's Day Invitational on Friday.
