Towson, Md. – The Geneseo men's lacrosse team (3-2) outshot
New England College (1-4) 51-19 on the way to a 21-7 win Thursday at Goucher. A
total of 12 players contributed a goal or an assist, including four who scored
their first career goal.
Geneseo outscored the Pilgrims 6-1 in the first quarter then sealed the game
with six more goals in the final 134 seconds of the second quarter.
Senior midfielder Tim Burgess (Syracuse/Westhill) was the catalyst for Geneseo’s
offense, winning 18 of 21 face-offs and picking up 14 ground balls (setting
career highs in both categories); the Knights scored off the game’s first two
face-offs, then converted five straight face-off wins into goals during their
explosive run that closed out the half. Burgess assisted on the opening goal,
then added an assist on the final goal of the opening half.
Geneseo’s 21 goals marked the program’s highest total since notching 22 in a
win over Morrisville on April 18, 2009.
Sophomore attacks Steven Cregan (Rochester/Brighton) and Sam Thompson (Queensbury/Queensbury)
both scored a career-high eight points; they were among the eight Knights who
recorded personal-best scoring totals in the game.
Cregan tallied four goals and four assists (matching career highs with both figures)
and raised his career total to 67 points in just 19 games. His 45 assists rank
18th on the program’s all-time list. Thompson’s five goals and three assists
were both single-game highs.
Sophomore attack Andre Keating (Ithaca/Ithaca) finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Brent Lawless (Massapequa
Park/Massapequa) added a goal and two assists; he and Cregan both picked up four
ground balls as the Knights owned a 48-16 advantage.
Sophomore midfielder Cory Gleasman (Clinton/Clinton) scored the first two goals
of his career.
First year attack Joe Chiara (Shaker/Latham), first year attack Harrison
Dittmeier (Babylon/Babylon) and sophomore midfielder Zach Yehl (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) all scored their first collegiate goals. Chiara added a pair of assists.
First year Alex Davis (Victor/Victor), senior Jeff Dunworth (Katonah/John Jay) and
junior Jules Zidi (Yorktown/Yorktown) each had two of the Knights’ season-high
15 caused turnovers.
All three Geneseo goalkeepers saw action. Junior Ryan Zaremba (Bay Shore/Army
Prep) earned the win, allowing three goals over the game’s first 35:12. Senior Michael
Greubel (North Merrick/Mepham) closed out the third quarter and sophomore Adam
Perri (Auburn/Auburn) made a career-high three saves in playing the third
quarter.
Senior midfielder John Felix (Scarsdale/Scarsdale) collected his first point of
the season, assisting on Yehl's first-quarter goal.
The Knights return to action Tuesday, hosting St. Lawrence at 4 p.m. in their
home opener.
