GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo men’s basketball team (7-3) won
its fifth straight game, outlasting the visiting Medaille Mavericks (5-6)
Wednesday.
The Knights held a seven-point lead – their biggest of the game – with 3:22 remaining
before Medaille rallied to pull to within 60-59 with 59 seconds left. The
Mavericks, who attempted just one free throw in the game’s first 56:44, made
eight in a row down the stretch before deliberately missing their final attempt
with just over a second left.
After Medaille’s 8-1 run that cut Geneseo’s lead to one point with 19 seconds
to go, the Knights broke the Maverick press and sophomore forward Gordon Lyons
(Amherst/Canisius) converted a lay-up with five seconds remaining. The
Mavericks went to the free-throw line and made their first shot before
deliberately missing in an attempt to regain possession, but Geneseo controlled
the rebound and senior guard Marcus Hoy (Batavia/Batavia) hit two free throws
to provide the final margin.
Lyons led Geneseo with 16 points and nine rebounds. He added four steals and
three assists, matching career highs in both categories. Junior guard Connor
Fedge (Bellport/Bellport) added 15 points and senior forward Ryan Riefenhauser
(Dobbs Ferry/Dobbs Ferry) scored 10. Riefenhauser led the Knights with five
assists and pulled down six rebounds.
The Knights shot 54.2 percent from the floor, marking the fifth time in 10
games they’ve made at least 53 percent of their field goal attempts, and
allowed a season-low 16 rebounds in outrebounding the Mavericks 35-16. Their
rebound margin of +19 was their second-highest of the season.
Geneeo returns to action Tuesday with a State University of New York
Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game at Brockport. The Knights are the only team
unbeaten in SUNYAC play, topping the standings with a 3-0 mark.
