GENESEO, N.Y. – The Geneseo ice hockey team (17-8-1)
advanced to the semifinal round of the State University of New York Athletic
Conference (SUNYAC) Championship Tournament, exploding for a 9-0 win over
Potsdam (9-15-1) in quarterfinal action. The third-seeded Knights will play a 7
p.m. game at second-seeded Plattsburgh (18-6-1).
Geneseo’s nine goals was the program’s highest postseason total since a 10-0
win over the University at Buffalo in 1986; all nine came in the final 38
minutes. A total of 13 of Geneseo’s 18 skaters recorded a point and the Knights
allowed just 22 shots on goal in posting their first shutout in SUNYAC
tournament play since blanking Fredonia 6-0 in 2001.
Junior forward Zachary Vit (Villanova, Pa./Green Mountain Glades) led Geneseo with a career-high five points on a goal and four assists. Sophomore forward Tyler Brickler (Riverwoods, Ill. /UMass-Lowell) and first year defenseman Alex Lubczuk (Kitchener, Ont./Georgetown Raiders) both finished with a goal and two assists. First year forward David Ripple (Winter Springs,
Fla. /Coulee Region Chill) added a pair of goals and an assist.
After a scoreless first period, Lubczuk scored
his fifth goal of the year, converting passes from Vit and first year defenseman Nate Brown (Bethel Park, Pa./Bay State Breakers) on a four-on-four 2:14 into the second period.
Geneseo notched three goals in a span of 3:57 with Ripple, Brickler and first
year forward Ryan Donnelly (Stittsville, Ont. /Kanata Stallions) scoring to put
the Knights up 4-0. Vit's power play goal late in the period allowed the Knights to match
their highest-scoring period of the season.
In the third, power play goals by Brown and senior forward Corbin Rosmarin (Rexford/Northern
Cyclones), followed by goals from junior forward Carson Schell (Saskatoon,
Sask./Nanaimo Clippers) and Ripple put the game out of reach.
Rosmarin's goal was his team-leading 13th of the season. Schell and Brown also picked up assists. Junior Jonathan Sucese (Fairport/Northfield Mt. Hermon)
assisted on a pair of goals.
Sophomore Bryan Haude (Hilton/Hartford Wolfpack) stopped 22 shots in recording his third shutout of the season. Those three shutouts are one short of Geneseo's career record.
Vit raised his season total to a team-leading 29 points (seven goals, 22 assists); sophomore defenseman Jack Caradonna (Markham, Ont./Stouffville Spirit) assisted on Vit's goal to give him 22 assists -- the most of any defenseman in the nation this season.
Geneseo and Plattsburgh split their regular-season meetings with the Knights
handing the visiting Cardinals their first loss of the year (3-2) and
Plattsburgh posting a 6-1 victory at home.
