Salisbury, Md. – The Geneseo softball team (1-3) split a pair of games Saturday
at Salisbury’s Sea Gull Classic. The Knights lost 4-2 to Eastern Mennonite (5-5)
Saturday then routed Hunter (0-4) 8-0 in five innings. The victory over Hunter
was the first for interim coach Dave Sylvester.
First year outfielder Mikayla Moore (Stillwater/Stillwater) singled in two runs
to highlight the Knights’ five-run fifth inning. Moore added a triple and
scored two runs.
Sophomore second baseman Jenna Reilley (Williamsville/East) also scored a pair
of runs and senior first baseman Jessica Steubing (Fairport/Fairport) drove in two.
Senior Corrin Spallone (Greece/Greece Arcadia) struck out nine batters in a
complete-game shutout. She allowed just three hits and two walks.
Steubing’s two-run single in the third opened the scoring, plating sophomore catcher
Ashley Fillmore (Getzville/Williamsville East) and first year shortstop Samantha
Brown (Canton/Hugh C. Williams). The Knights pushed their lead to 3-0 in the
fourth when Moore led off with a triple then scored on a one-out wild pitch.
Geneseo’s five-run outburst in the fifth started when Fillmore reached on an
infield error, then stole third. Reilley singled in a run and after Steubing
reached on another error, Moore singled both runners home. Run-scoring singles
by first year infielder Catherine Krok (Buffalo/Williamsville East) and sophomore outfielder Kayleigh Blersch (Lancaster/Lancaster) capped the rally.
In Saturday’s first game, the Knights tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth before
the Royals won the game with a two-out, two-run walk-off home run in the bottom
of the seventh.
Geneseo tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth. Fillmore singled down the left field
line to lead off the inning then stole second. After Brown beat out a bunt to
reach first, both runners advanced on an infield ground out. Brown scored on a
sacrifice fly by Steubing.
Senior outfielder Lexi Williams (Waterford/Shenendehowa) put the Knights on the
board first, hitting a two-out home run over the center field fence. The home
run was her first of the season and the eighth of her career.
Williams and Fillmore both had two of Geneseo’s six hits.
The Knights are idle until kicking off their eight-game spring trip to
Clermont, Fla., Monday, March 18. Geneseo takes on Amherst and Western New
