GENESEO, N.Y. – The #25 Geneseo
ice hockey team (3-1-1, 2-0-1 SUNYAC) extended its unbeaten streak to four with
a 3-2 win over visiting Cortland (0-3-0, 0-2-0 SUNYAC) in a State University of
New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday. The Knights erased a 2-0 Red
Dragon lead in the final 14 minutes of regulation and won the game on a goal by
sophomore Jack Caradonna (Markham,
Ont./Stouffville Spirit) as time expired in overtime.
Caradonna’s goal, his second of the
game, was reviewed by officials before being ruled good. A Cortland penalty
with the Red Dragons on the power play led to a face-off in Cortland end with
5.5 seconds remaining; junior Carson Schell (Saskatoon, Sask./Nanaimo Clippers) won the draw, leading to a shot by junior Zachary Vit (Villanova, Pa./Green Mountain
Glades) that was saved. Caradonna
put the rebound in the net as time expired. Vit and senior Colin de
Jersey (West Vancouver, B.C./Burnaby Express) assisted on the dramatic
game-winner (Vit’s assist was his
team-leading sixth).
Caradonna assisted on both
third-period Geneseo goals. Vit’s
first goal of the season – on a 5-on-3 power play – put the Ice Knights on the
board 6:44 in on a hard shot off passes from sophomore Tyler Brickler (Riverwoods, Ill./Mass.-Lowell) and Caradonna. Five minutes later first
year David Ripple (Winter Springs, Fla./Coulee Region Chill)
tied the score with his first career goal. Caradonna
and senior Nick Ryan (Rochester/Buffalo
Jr. Sabres) recorded his third assists on the tying goal; Caradonna’s was his third of the season.
Senior Adrian Rubeniuk (Grandview, Man./Dauphin Kings) stopped
35 shots, including four with the score tied 2-2, to remain unbeaten on the
year. He lowered his goals-against average to 1.92 and raised his save
percentage to .931.
