The Geneseo men's swimming and diving team took a slim four-point lead, 214-210, over the Cortland Red Dragons after the first day of the 2012 SUNYAC Swimming and Diving championships at Erie Community College tonight. The Blue Wave got off to a fast start as the 200 freestyle relay team of junior Frank Schiappa and seniors Aaron Wagner, Drew Rogers and Dan Strothenke won in a time of 1:23.60. First year John Nasky and senior Nate Foley finished 1-2 in the 500 freestyle in 4:42.07 and 4:43.77, respectively, while senior Ken Pink placed third in the 200 IM in 1:56.43. Geneseo dominated the 50 freestyle as Schiappa was second in 21.25, Strothenke placed fourth in 21.57, Wagner was fifth in 21.85 and Rogers finished sixth in 21.97. Sophomore Brandon Peifer finished sixth in one-meter diving with a score of 406.80. The meet continues on Friday and Saturday.
The Geneseo women's swimming and diving team posted a pair of NCAA provisional qualifying times on their way to 214 points, but Fredonia took the top five spots in three-meter diving to lead the competition with 235 points after day one at the 2012 SUNYAC Swimming and Diving championships at Erie Community College. First year Abby Max won the 500 freestyle in an NCAA provisional time of 5:01.70 and anchored the 400 medley relay team with classmate Haleigh Wixson, junior Kaitlin Wilcoxen and sophomore Lily Powell to an NCAA provisional time of 3:54.63. Sophomore Lauren Boyce finished second in the 200 IM in a time of 2:10.82 and the 200 freestyle relay team of Wixson, sophomore Corinne Vairo, junior Elyssa Max and Abby Max finished second in 1:37.22. Wixson finished fifth in the 50 free in 24.33 and first year Caroline Gardner finished seventh in three-meter diving with a score of 385.95. The championships continue on Friday and Saturday.
