Ithaca, N.Y. – The Geneseo women’s lacrosse
team (2-1) dropped its first game of the season, losing 11-8 at #17 Ithaca (2-0)
in a match-up of undefeated teams.
The Knights rallied from a three-goal deficit to force a 5-5 halftime tie, then
took a 6-5 lead early in the second period before the host Bombers closed the
game on a 4-1 run.
Junior attack Carolyn Buonocore (Syracuse/Westhill) led Geneseo with three
goals and an assist; she raised her season total to a team-leading 13 points
(11 goals, two assists) and upped her career figures to 132 goals and 157
points (fourth and sixth, respectively, on the program’s all-time list.
Junior attack Meredith Weber (Bellport/Bellport) scored a career-high three
goals; she tied the game at five-all late in the first half, opened the
second-half scoring to put the Knights up 6-5 and then tied the game for the
final time with 19:03 left in regulation.
Senior attack Lea Paris (Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) assisted on two goals –
back-to-back scores in Geneseo’s 3-0 spurt to close the first half.
Buonocore and junior midfielder Emily Haggerty (Syracuse/Westhill) – who recorded
a goal and an assist – led Geneseo with three draw controls apiece. Senior
midfielder Rachel Petrone (Rochester/Penfield) picked up a team-best three
ground balls.
Senior Julie Bernatzky (Mount Sinai/Mount Sinai) made six saves in goal.
Sophomore attack Katey Hart (Syracuse/West Genesee) notched a goal and an
assist.
Geneseo returns to action Wednesday with a 4:30 p.m. game at #15 St. John
Fisher.
